In November of 2014 Zirbs Kunststoffverarbeitung, a German packaging company based in Neuhaus-Schierschnitz, was commissioned by BASF to manufacture the trays for a praline box which BASF would use to send as Christmas gifts to its customers. While this was not a particularly unusual request, Martin Zirbs and his team still gave it an increased level of attention because BASF was using its new biodegradable Ecovio® film for the job. SP

Over 3.5 million tonnes of cocoa are produced every year, with about 35 million tonnes of cocoa husks going to waste as an unexploited side product. But the husks hold great promise for the packaging and confectionery industry, as demonstrated by chocolate maker Barry Callebaut and the British packaging specialist James Cropper: in a joint effort they developed the multiple award-winning Cocoa Paper, a packaging paper with a cocoa husk content of 10?%. As the world’s only trade fair for sweets and snacks, from 1 to 4 February 2015 in Cologne, ProSweets Cologne, the international supplier trade fair for the confectionery industry will again be taking place at the same time as the International Sweets and Biscuits Fair (ISM), with 322 suppliers from 29 countries, presenting new solutions and further developments for ingredients, production, packing and logistics for sweets and snacks. Effective January 1st, 2015 the Krüger Group, Bergisch Gladbach, Germany took over the 25.1 % holdings in Bexbach, Germany-based Fuchs & Hoffmann GmbH still held by Wawi Schokolade AG, Pirmasens, Germany. This increases the Krüger holdings from the previous level of 74.9 % to 100 %. SP
