NielsenIQ confectionery monitor: significant revenue increases in every category

German retail closed out the first half of 2024 with a notable increase in confectionery revenues of 8.7% up to € 9.048 bn.
According to the NielsenIQ (NIQ) confectionery monitor, sales volume however only increased by 1.4% up to 887,000 tonnes (basis: food retailers + drug stores).

With an increase of 12.5% up to € 1.506 bn, sugar confectionery was the only category to achieve double-digit growth, but it nevertheless also experienced a slight decrease in sales volume (- 0.3%; 181,000 t). Chocolate products, the strongest product group for revenues, enjoyed an increase in the first half of the year of 6.8% up to € 3.943 bn (sales volume - 0.9%; 314,000 t).

The salty snacks category improved its performance compared to the same period in the previous year by 9.9%, taking revenues up to € 2.424 bn (sales volume + 6.2%; 238,000 t). The sweet baked goods product group achieved a revenue increase of 7.7% up to € 1.175 bn (sales volume + 1.4%; 154,000 t).

With confectionery earnings of € 4.130 bn (+ 10.8%), discounters proved to be the most important sales channel, followed by small consumer markets (+ 8.7%; € 2.019 bn), large consumer markets (+ 5.1%; € 1.711 bn), large supermarkets (+ 4.3%; € 606.7 m), drug stores (+ 12.2%; € 521.9 m), and small supermarkets (- 10.1%; € 59.1 m).
