Circana confectionery monitor: sugar confectionery revenues with double-digit growth

German retail confectionery sales in the first half of 2024 achieved a revenue increase of 6.3% up to € 9.712 bn (basis: food retailers >= 200 m² including hard discounters + drug stores).
 

According to the Circana confectionery monitor, due to declining sales volume (- 1.4%; 983,700 t) this growth was driven strictly through pricing (+ 7.8%). The market researchers cited the private label share at 32.3% (+ 0.1%).

Growth in the chocolate products category was slightly below average at 6.1% up to € 3.823 bn, with a decline in sales volume of 3.0% down to 298,200 tonnes. Salty snacks increased sales earnings by 7.6% up to € 2.548 bn, and came out as the only product group to also experience an increase in sales volume (+ 4.3%; 252,000 t).

The largest price increase by far was registered by sugar confectionery with 14.7%. An increase in revenues in this category of 10.3% up to € 1.539 bn faced off against a 3.8% decrease in sales volume down to 183,200 tonnes. Suppliers in the sweet baked goods/cakes category only increased revenues in the first six months of 2024 by 1.8% up to € 1.783 bn (sales volume - 3.0%; 249,100 t).

Confectionery revenues increased in comparison to the same period in the previous year by a total of € 577 m, with discounters accounting for 52.7% of the growth with an increase of € 304 m. Consumer markets (>= 800 m²) increased confectionery earnings by € 220 m (share: 38.1%).
