NIQ confectionery monitor: double-digit revenue growth in the first half of 2023

The percentage of German retail confectionery sales increased by double-digits in the first half of 2023. The market researchers at NIQ (NielsenIQ) have reported an increase of 12.1% up to € 8.226 bn in their confectionery monitor through the 26th calendar week.
 

During the same period, sales volume sank by 0.9% down to 854,300 tonnes (basis: food retailers + drug stores).

According to NIQ, all four product groups grew via a higher pricing level. The strongest growth engine was the sweet baked goods category, with a revenue increase of 15.4% up to € 1.061 bn (sales volume - 5.1%; 143,600 t), followed by salty snacks with growth of 15.0% up to € 2.172 bn (sales volume - 0.9%; 220,100 t). Sugar confectionery providers increased sales in the first half of 2023 by 14.7% up to € 1.357 bn (sales volume + 0.8%; 180,400 t). At 8.6% up to € 3.636 bn, growth in the strongest product group for revenues, chocolate products, was moderate in comparison (sales volume + 0.1%; 310,200 t).

Discounters were the sales channel with the highest increase in confectionery revenues (+ 13.2%; + € 430.8 m), followed by small consumer markets (+ 10.9%; + € 180.0 m) and large consumer markets (+ 10.7%; + € 155.4 m). Drug stores (+ 18.3%; + € 70.8 m), large supermarkets (+ 8.0%; + € 42.6 m), and small supermarkets (+ 14.5%; + € 8.2 m) enjoyed significantly notable increases compared to the same period last year.
