The study compared the prices for a shopping basket with 16 A-brand products in 21 European markets. During the study period running from January 2022 to January 2023, the average price in all 21 countries rose by 9.7%, from € 27.25 in 2022 up to € 29.90 in the first month of this year, with a total of 12 countries registering a double-digit rate of increase.
While the price increases in the previous high-price countries of Norway (+ 1.2%), Greece (+ 0.8%), and Switzerland (+ 5.1%) were more moderate, Hungary for instance saw an increase rate of 24.7% for the shopping basket. This change by € 6.47 up to a total of € 32.66 puts the Hungarian market in the top four most expensive confectionery markets behind Norway, which lost 11.5 points in the ranking, as well as Denmark and Portugal, which was included in the study for the first time and registered an increase of 13.7% up to a goods value of € 34.27. In contrast, Greece (- 8.2 points) fell from 4th place down to 13th place.
Belgium, which came in 5th place the last time the survey was conducted, fell to 11th place (€ 29.71) and below the average price of € 29.90. Elsewhere though, major price increases pushed the Czech Republic (+ 12.9%), Austria (+ 11.7%), Italy (+ 7.4%), and Slovakia (+ 10.9%) into the Top 10, above the average of all 21 countries. Even the countries at the lower tier of the rankings demonstrated significant rates of increase for the shopping basket. As such, Romania (+ 14.8%), Poland (+ 10.8%), France (+ 11.4%), and Germany (+ 11.8%) have improved their ranking shares respectively to 87, 85, and 80 points.
NielsenIQ established the prices including VAT as the basis for the price barometer in the countries that were examined. Corresponding calculations were conducted for different packaging sizes in individual countries. For the market definition, the market researchers included hypermarkets and supermarkets, leaving out discounters when possible.
The shopping basket for all markets contained the following brand products: Fisherman‘s Friend Regular Mint 25 g, Mentos Single Pack 38 g, Tic Tac Fresh Mints 1 Box 18 g, Haribo Gold Bears Fruit 200 g bag, Mars chocolate bar 51 g, Ferrero Rocher chocolates 200 g, Kinder Surprise Eggs 20 g, Nutella Normal Hazelnut 400 g, Ritter Sport Hazelnut Milk Chocolate 100 g, Lindt Excellence 100 g, Pringles Snacks Original Salted 185 g, Lays Chips large size 150 g, TUC Cracker 100 g, Mondelez Oreo 176 g, Bahlsen Choco Leibniz Milk 125 g, and McVities Digestives Chocolate 200 g.
