IRI confectionery monitor: 2022 balance shows mild revenue increase and stable sales volume

German confectionery suppliers closed out 2022 with a slight increase in revenues of 2.3% up to € 15.392 bn.
According to the IRI confectionery monitor, sales volume fell slightly by 0.4% down to 1.906 m tonnes (basis: food retailers + drug stores + hard discounters + gas station shops).

The sweet baked goods and cakes category achieved the highest increase, with revenues rising by 8.5% up to € 2.859 bn (sales volume: + 3.6%; 481,529 t). Respectable growth was also achieved by the sugar confectionery product group, with € 2.154 bn representing a 6.2% increase over the previous year (sales volume: + 1.8%; 369,934 t).

The IRI market researchers registered increased revenues (+ 3.9%) of € 4.207 bn (sales volume: - 0.7%; 475,181 t) for salty snacks in 2022. In contrast, the strongest revenues category, chocolate products (without season) came in lower than the previous year’s level with € 6.172 bn, a drop of 2.6% (sales volume: - 4.5%; 579,645 t). The chewing gum segment did significantly better with revenue growth of 4.1% up to just under € 445 m (sales volume: + 4.4%; 297 million pieces).
