NielsenIQ confectionery monitor: 2022 revenues match previous year’s level

German retail confectionery sales in 2022 came in at around the same value level as the preceding year.
According to the NielsenIQ confectionery monitor, revenues dropped only slightly by 0.1% down to € 15.718 bn, as sales volume declined by 3.1% down to 1.797 m tonnes (basis: food retailers + drug stores).

Sweet baked goods achieved the highest level of growth with revenues increasing by 4.4% up to € 2.276 bn (sales volume - 1.9%; 360,900 t). The NielsenIQ market researchers registered sugar confectionery suppliers enjoying an increase in sales of 2.5% up to € 2.413 bn (sales volume - 0.7%; 353,000 t). The salty snacks category increased revenues by 2.3% up to € 3.908 bn (sales volume - 2.7%; 448,500 t). In contrast, chocolate products, the most important category, suffered painful losses with a decline of 3.6% down to € 7.121 bn (sales volume - 5.4%; 634,400 t).

Drug stores enjoyed a notable increase in 2022 with confectionery revenues rising by 7.2% (+ € 57.2 m). Values exceeding the previous year were also noted for discounters (+ 0.5%; + € 31.7 m) and small supermarkets (+ 4.7%; + € 5.5 m). Confectionery revenues fell for the remaining sales channels of large supermarkets (- 3.7%; - € 42.3 m), small consumer markets (- 0.7%; - € 25.6 m), and large consumer markets (- 1.5%; - € 48.6 m).
