IRI confectionery monitor: chocolate products drop in revenues and sales volume

German retail confectionery sales up until October of 2022 slightly topped the previous year’s value.
In their latest monitor, the market researchers at IRI report an increase in revenues of 0.4% up to € 12.301 bn, with a decline in sales volume of 1.2% down to 1.562 m tonnes (basis: food retailers + drug stores + hard discounters + gas station shops).

The sweet baked goods and cake category achieved the highest revenue growth with an increase of 6.4% up to € 2.387 bn (sales volume + 2.9%; 409,906 t). IRI reports that sugar confectionery suppliers increased their earnings by 3.9% up to € 1.766 bn (sales volume + 0.7%; 309,802 t). Salty snacks also came in positive, with revenue growth of 1.5% up to € 3.360 bn (sales volume - 1.7%; 381,952 t).

In contrast, in the first ten months of 2022 revenues in the strongest category chocolate products (without season) suffered a notable decrease of 4.2% down to € 4.788 bn (sales volume - 5.3%; 460,003 t). The chewing gum segment exceeded the previous year’s value by 3.7% up to around € 369 m (sales volume + 4.0%; 247 million pieces).
