NielsenIQ confectionery monitor: only sugar confectionery slightly up

German retail confectionery sales have declined this year through calendar week 35.
According to the NielsenIQ confectionery monitor, revenues fell by 3.2% down to € 9.497 bn, accompanied by a decline in sales volume of 4.5% down to 1.120 m tonnes (basis: grocery retail + drug stores).

Sugar confectionery was the only category to at least increase revenues slightly (+ 0.2%; € 1.583 bn) over the same period in the previous year (sales volume - 1.9%; 237,400 t). The biggest losses were registered in the chocolate goods product group, with revenues dropping by 5.2% down to € 4.155 bn (sales volume - 5.3%; 388,800 t). The salty snacks category came in below the value for the same period in the previous year, with € 2.531 bn representing a drop of 2.4% (sales volume - 5.4%; 294,400 t). Sweet baked goods suppliers achieved revenues of € 1.229 bn, falling below the 2021 value by 2.1% (sales volume - 4.7%; 199,600 t).

Drug stores increased confectionery revenues by 5.3% (+ € 25.6 m). Small supermarkets remained slightly above the level of the same period for the previous year (+ 0.4%; + € 0.3 m). All other sales channels dropped into the red: large supermarkets (- 6.9%; - € 50.9 m), small consumer markets (- 3.4%; - € 75.2 m), large consumer markets (- 4.2%; - € 82.5 m), and discounters (- 3.0%; - € 128.8 m).
