The latest IRI confectionery monitor registered a revenue decline of 1.2% down to € 9.406 bn and a fall in sales volume of 1.6% down to 1.209 m tonnes (basis: food retailers + drug stores + hard discounters + gas station shops).
The sweet baked goods and cakes category demonstrated the strongest growth, with a 4.3% increase up to € 1.847 bn (sales volume + 2.3%; 322,660 t). Sugar confectionery suppliers also delivered a solid performance, increasing earnings through the end of August by 2.3% up to € 1.339 bn (sales volume + 0.3%; 238,438 t).
In contrast, chocolate products (without season) suffered notable losses. With € 3.632 bn, the strongest product group for revenues came in at 4.8% below the level of the same period for the previous year (sales volume - 5.2%; 350,632 t). Salty snacks suffered a slight fall in revenues (- 1.3%) with € 2.593 bn (sales volume - 2.9%; 298,062 t).
Following a difficult phase, the chewing gum segment is currently enjoying an obvious upturn. IRI calculated an increase in revenues of 6.2% up to € 291.9 m (sales volume + 5.7%; 194.3 million pieces).
