IRI confectionery monitor: sugar confectionery continues upward trend

German retail confectionery sales through April of 2022 have greatly surpassed the value of the same period for the previous year. According to the IRI confectionery monitor, revenues increased by 4.4% up to € 5.095 bn. Sales volume rose by 4.7% up to 662,002 tonnes (basis: food retailers + drug stores + hard discounters + gas station shops).
 

The sugar confectionery category impressively continued its upward trend with revenues increasing by 8.7% up to € 720.4 m (sales volume + 8.0%; 130,716 t). The chewing gum segment came in with the highest rate of increase at 10.4% up to € 147.0 m (sales volume + 8.3%; 98.3 million pieces).
Chocolate products (without season) achieved a revenue increase of 3.8% up to € 2.061 bn (sales volume + 2.9%; 197,891 t). The Christmas chocolate season went well (September 2020 - January 2021 vs. September 2021 - January 2022) with revenues of € 803.3 m (+ 14.5%) and sales volume of 48,136 tonnes (+ 12.5%). The Easter chocolate season (weeks 6 - 13 2021 vs. weeks 8 - 15 2022) improved the previous year’s revenues by 2.0% up to € 560.9 m (sales volume + 7.6%; 36,173 t).

The sweet baked goods and cake category had a solid performance in the first four months of 2022 with a revenue increase of 6.1% up to € 958.4 m (sales volume + 7.0%; 173,052 t). Salty snacks increased revenues by 2.0% up to € 1.356 bn (sales volume + 2.2%; 160,342 t).
