IRI confectionery monitor: growth in every category

German retail confectionery sales have gotten off to a solid start in 2022. According to the latest IRI confectionery monitor, revenues rose in the first two months by 3.4% up to € 2.336 bn. Sales volume only rose however by 2.2% up to 303,500 tonnes (basis: food retailers + drug stores + hard discounters + gas station shops).
Chocolate products (without season), the strongest revenue category, increased sales in January and February of 2022 by 3.8% up to € 919.9 m (sales volume + 0.8%; 88,686 t). The IRI market researchers registered a significant increase in revenues for the Christmas chocolate season (September – December 2020/2021) of 14.2% up to € 791.4 m (sales volume + 12.0%; 46,855 t).

Salty snacks grew at a notably slower pace than in the previous year. € 648.8 m signified revenue growth of 1.4% (sales volume + 1.2%; 77,052 t). Sweet baked goods and cakes enjoyed above-average development, exceeding the previous year’s revenues by 5.3% up to € 434.1 m (sales volume + 4.0%; 77,246 t).

The sugar confectionery category is enjoying a boom with increased revenues of 3.8% up to € 333.2 m (sales volume + 3.0%; 60,515 t). And following an especially difficult phase related to the Corona pandemic, the chewing gum segment kicked off the new year with notable growth. Revenues in this category climbed by 11.9% up to € 68.0 m (sales volume + 8.7%; 45 million pieces).
