IRI confectionery monitor: chocolate products drive growth

German retail confectionery sales increased significantly over the level of the previous year in the first ten months of 2021.
The confectionery monitor from the market researchers at IRI through October of 2021 indicates a boost in revenues of 5.7% up to € 12.422 bn, with an accompanying sales volume increase of 2.2% up to 1.614 m tonnes (basis: food retailers + drug stores + hard discounters + gas station shops).

The chocolate products category (without season) experienced above-average growth, with revenues rising by 7.1% up to € 5.065 bn and sales volume increasing by 3.3% up to 493,444 tonnes. Providers of salty snacks, the product group which had previously enjoyed the highest rates of growth, increased earnings by 4.3% up to € 3.319 bn (sales volume + 1.6%; 393,871 t).

For sweet baked goods and cakes through the end of October, IRI registered a revenue increase of 5.2% up to € 2.304 bn, with sales volume rising only slightly by 0.9% up to 411,531 tonnes. With sugar confectionery, solid revenue growth was registered with € 1.734 bn denoting an increase of 5.0% (sales volume + 3.3%; 315,358 t).

The only category standing out as a cause for concern remains the chewing gum segment: Earnings here sank by 5.9% down to € 362.3 m, with sales quantities falling even further by 7.9% down to 244.4 million pieces.
