Katjes International invests in British start-up Nuud Snacks

Katjes International GmbH & Co. KG is acquiring a stake in the English company Nuud Snacks Ltd via its 75% subsidiary Tuckshop London Ltd. Founded in 2021 by Keir Carnie, the start-up Nuud aims to make the market for chewing gum more sustainable by focusing on plastic-free, plant-based products.
In a financing round totalling GBP 750,000  (€ 882,000), Tuckshop is acquiring around 10% cent of the shares and thus creating new capital for Nuud‘s further growth.

The investment was made in partnership with Jamie Laing and Ed Williams, founders of Candy Kittens, in which Katjes International is the majority shareholder. Laing and Williams hold 12.5% shares. "We were excited about Nuud's brand, product quality and claim 'Chew Plants Not Plastic' from the start. Not all consumers are probably aware that a conventional chewing gum contains about as much plastic as a straw," explained Bastian Fassin, Managing Partner of Katjes International. "Overall, Nuud's sustainable focus fits very well with our own beliefs."

Nuud's chewing gums are plant-based, sugar-free and biodegradable; they also contain no plastic, unlike conventional chewing gums. The company is already available in England through national listings at Waitrose, Morrisons, Co-op as well as online. In England alone, over 100,000 tonnes of plastic chewing gum are chewed each year. Nuud founder Carnie aims to capture this market in a more sustainable way.
