Dramatic redundancy plan at Wrigley chewing gum factory in Biesheim

The U.S. concern Mars Wrigley has announced in a press release a redundancy plan that will result in the loss of 280 jobs in Biesheim (Haut-Rhin), its chewing gum production site.
69 positions will be maintained to ensure the gum base production activity.

The management invokes a drastic and continuous drop in demand for chewing gum in “Stick/Tabs” formats on the European markets. The local newspapers write: “With a -37 % drop in sales of products in tablet formats in Europe between 2016 and 2019, and a sharp drop in 2020 due to the Covid crisis, sticks/tabs formats are literally disappearing from the European market.”
