Nielsen confectionery monitor: solid growth in the first half of 2021
German confectionery retail sales enjoyed solid development in the first half of 2021. According to the figures from the latest Nielsen confectionery monitor, revenues increased through calendar week 26 of the year by 3.6% up to € 7.535 bn.
Sales volume rose over the previous year (YTD) by 1.4% up to 5.174 bn packages (source: Nielsen Market Track, grocery retail + drug stores). However, in June 2021 (calendar weeks 23-26) there was a decline in revenues of 2.4%.
The largest growth in the first half of the year came once again from the salty snacks category, with revenues of € 1.963 bn (+ 8.4%) and sales volume of 1.367 bn packages (+ 7.2%). Chocolate products improved sales by 3.6% up to € 3.473 bn (sales volume: 2.163 bn packs, + 0.9%). The sweet baked goods product class saw revenues rise by 1.7% up to € 932 m (sales volume: 668 m packs, - 1.9%). Sugar confectionery closed out the first half-year of 2021 as the only cate-gory falling below the previous year‘s level for the same period. € 1.168 bn indicated a drop in revenues of 1.9% (sales volume: 975 m packs, - 2.6%).
Increases in total confectionery revenues were achieved in the last 52 weeks (week to July 4, 2021) in the sales channels small consumer markets (+ 8.9%), large consumer markets (+ 6.7%), large supermarkets (+ 3.4%), drug stores (+ 2.7%), and discounters (+ 2.2%). The only declines in confectionery sales during this period came in small supermarkets (- 5.9%).
