IRI confectionery monitor: solid growth during the crisis

German retail confectionery sales indicate a significant annual boost for 2020. According to the IRI confectionery monitor, revenues (without chewing gum and without seasonal products) through the end of October totalled € 11.718 bn, an increase of 7.3% above the level of the previous year.
The effects of the Corona crisis also naturally played a major role in the significant rise in sales volume of 5.7% up to 1.570 m tonnes (basis: food retailers + drug stores + hard discounters + gas station shops).

As the accustomed growth driver, salty snacks increased sales in the first ten months of 2020 by 13.1% up to € 3.223 bn (sales volume: + 10.1%; 390,319 t). For the largest product group, chocolate products (without seasonal products), the IRI market researchers calculated a revenue increase of 5.9% up to € 4.674 bn, and a rise in sales volume of 5.4% up to 470,995 tonnes. The sweet baked goods and cake category registered an above-average revenue plus of 8.2% up to € 2.157 bn (sales volume: + 7.0%; 398,951 t).

Meanwhile, sugar confectionery and chewing gum suppliers were unable to profit from the Corona crisis. Sugar confectionery revenues sank marginally by 0.2% down to € 1.664 bn (sales volume: - 0.3%; 309,605 t). The chewing gum category suffered a significant sales decline of 12.6% down to € 362 m (sales volume: - 13.4%; 246.5 million pieces).
