Nielsen confectionery monitor: big gains in times of crisis

Confectionery sales in German retail experienced a significant boost in the first half of 2020, with a 7.9% increase up to € 7.271 bn.
According to the Nielsen confectionery monitor, sales volume rose by 7.8% up to 886,600 tonnes (basis: food retailers + drug stores; last accumulated year YTD – week through 28/06/2020). The Corona crisis-related measures played a major role in this highly positive development.

Salty snacks were the big winner in the half-year result, and they continue to consistently drive the category‘s development. Revenues climbed by 14.9% up to € 1.836 bn with sales quantity of 223,600 tonnes (+ 11.5%). Chocolate products, the largest product group, increased sales by a notable 6.2% up to € 3.341 bn, with volume rising by 6.1% up to 321,700 tonnes.

The baked goods segment also enjoyed above-average growth: € 910.2 m signified revenue growth of 11.5% with sales volume growth of 10.6% up to 160,300 tonnes. Sugar confectionery only managed mild growth with revenues of € 1.185 bn (+ 0.4%) and sales volume of 181,000 tonnes (+ 3.9%).

In a look at the distribution channels, the highest growth in confectionery revenues came from consumer markets (small + 7.4%; large + 5.1%) and discounters (+ 4.2%). The only losers here were small supermarkets (- 7.8%).
