Nielsen monitor: strong growth for total confectionery sales

Following the first four months of 2020, the confectionery revenues achieved in German retail stood at € 5.185 bn, an increase of 6.4% over the same period for the previous year.
According to figures from the Nielsen confectionery monitor, sales volume through the 18th week of the year rose by 6.3% up to 624,600 tonnes (basis: food retailers + drug stores; last accumulated year (YTD) – week to 03/05/2020).

The largest confectionery group in the German retail sector, chocolate products, increased earnings by 3.9% up to € 2.457 bn with sales volume of 233,300 tonnes (+ 4.1%). Once again, the salty snacks segment represented a strong engine for growth with a revenue increase of 14.6% up to € 1.269 bn (sales volume + 11.5%). The baked goods category also achieved above-average per­formance with increased revenues of 9.1% up to € 624.8 m (sales volume + 8.4%).

The Nielsen figures indicate that sugar confectionery recorded the weakest development, achieving € 834.1 m, an increase of 0.8% over the level of 2019, with sales volume increasing by 2.9% up to 125,900 tonnes. For seasonal articles, Nielsen reports growth of 3.1% up to € 1.700 bn (sales volume + 5.1%) for the past 52 weeks (MAT) from May 1st, 2019 to the end of April 2020.
