IRI confectionery monitor: sales and volume continue to decline

Even after ten months in 2018, confectionery sales in German retail remain below levels from the year prior. Cumulatively through the end of October, IRI market researchers calculated a sales decrease of 1.5% to € 10.289 bn.
Sales volume sank by 3.4% to 1.404 m tonnes (basis: food retailers + drug stores + hard discounters + gas station shops).

As before, salty snacks were the sole category on a growth trajectory with a rise in sales of 5.3% to € 2.619 bn alongside increased sales volume (+ 2.2%) at 331,100 tonnes. Chocolate products (without season) also suffered considerable losses compared with last year in sales (- 2.5 %; € 4.226 bn) and volume (- 3.7%; 426,413 t). The sweet baked goods and cakes product group, according to IRI, experienced significant sales declines of 5.3% to € 1.831 bn with a sales volume lower by 6.7% at 350,708 tonnes. Sugar confectionery also remained clearly below last year’s figures in both sales (- 4.8%; € 1.613 bn) and volume (- 5.1%; 296,244 t). The chewing gum segment recorded sales declines of 2.3% with € 409.1 m. Sales volume slowed 3.1% to approximately 286 million pieces.
