Nielsen monitor: slight declines in revenues and sales volume

German retailers saw declines in confectionery sales volume and revenues in the first 18 calendar weeks of 2018.
According to the current confectionery monitor from Nielsen, sales volume declined by 1.9% to 587,968 tonnes, while revenues fell by 0.8% to € 4.895 bn (basis: food retailers + drug stores + impulse channels + gas station shops + department stores). Year-round products ebbed slightly (volume - 3.0%, revenues - 1.4%), while seasonal items gained significant ground (+ 10.2%, + 3.7%).

Salty snacks were the sole category to achieve rising revenues at € 1.035 bn (+ 2.8%). The segment chocolate products fell short of the prior year‘s revenues by 1.1% at € 2.421 bn. The sugar confectionery category fell short of the prior year‘s value by 3.3% at € 902.8 m. The baked goods category saw losses of 1.8% (€ 536.1 m).

Confectionery sales trends by sales channel: declines were reported from hard discounters (- 1.8%), small and large supermarkets (- 7.5%, - 2.8%), as well as impulse channels + gas station shops (- 9.8%). In positive territory compared with the year prior were small and large consumer markets (+ 1.3%, + 0.4%) and drug stores (+ 2.1%).
