US traditional manufacturer Necco set for bankruptcy auction
Despite purchase negotiations with investment companies, Massachusetts bankruptcy judge sets auction of the Revere-based confectionery manufacturer The New England Confectionery Co. (Necco).
In a May filing, a federal bankruptcy judge greenlighted the bidding process, noting cash bids of at least USD 13.96 m must be made before May 18. Necco will continue to produce the wafers – as well as the brands Sky Bar, Mary Jane, Sweethearts – and other candies at least for the rest of the May, and perhaps through November, depending on who takes over the wholesaler after a bankruptcy auction at end of May. Boston-based liquidator Gordon Brothers has committed to continuing to operate the company, which traces its roots to 1847, through November if it has the winning bid at the auction. Beyond that, Necco‘s future is uncertain – even more so if someone else ends up winning at auction.
