Nielsen: confectionery sales slightly on the rise

Nielsen‘s market researchers have computed a 0.7% increase of confectionery sales in the German retail for the period up to the 35th calendar week 2017, hitting € 8.820 bn.
Sales volumes were down 0.6% to 1.119 m tonnes (basis: food retailers + drug stores + impulse channels + gas station shops + department stores). Chocolate products posted a slight increase in turnover of 0.5% to € 3.996 bn. According to Nielsen, the renewed, 2.9% rise in salty snacks sales to € 1.977 bn was mainly down to premium nuts, snack specialities and trail mixes. The negative trend plaguing the sugar confectionery segment continued: € 1.759 bn meant a sales downturn of 1.2%. With € 1.088 bn, the baked goods category was up 0.8% from last year‘s level.

The trend in confectionery turnover can be broken down into the following distribution channels: consumer markets, discounters, drug stores and department stores saw some growth while supermarkets as well as impulse channels and gas station shops experienced losses. The share in promotional sales went up 1.3 percentage points to 24.6%, with all categories posting some growth, most notably baked goods (+ 2.2%).
