IRI confectionery monitor: revenues up in the summer

Following a sluggish phase in May and June, confectionery sales in German retail underwent positive development once again in July and August.
 

The market researchers at IRI calculated increased revenues of 1.8% up to € 8.071 bn for the first eight months of 2017. Sales volume of 1.126 m tonnes indicates a rise of 0.6% over the level of the previous year (basis: food retailers + drug stores + hard discounters + gas station shops).

Chocolate products (without season), the strongest category, registered a 1.1% increase in revenue up to € 3.321 bn while sales quantities dropped slightly by 0.3% down to 336,586 tonnes. The 5.3% revenue boost up to € 1.936 bn in the salty snacks category was significantly higher than in the half-year results (+ 4.0%). After eight months the sales volume of 252,223 tonnes stood 2.8% higher than the previous year.

Sweet baked goods & cake increased sales earnings by 1.7% up to € 1.499 bn with sales volume growth of 1.3% up to 293,744 tonnes. Revenue decreases were only noted in sugar confectionery, where € 1.315 bn signified a drop of 1.2% (sales volume 243,148 t, - 1.0%). Chewing gum sales only slightly exceeded the previous year‘s revenues (€ 328.9 m, + 0.1%), with a total of 232.1 million pieces of chewing gum (- 1.7%) sold in the German retail sector by the end of August 2017.
