Nielsen monitor: salty snacks undergo an exciting phase

Following a weak start to the year, confectionery companies made up for the losses in German retail by early May 2017; the recorded sales were up 1.4% to € 4.98 bn – with a stagnant sales volume of 609,850 tonnes (+ 0.3%).
As Nielsen monitor (basis: food retailers + drug stores + impulse channels + gas station shops + department stores) shows, salty snacks remain the sector‘s growth driver with a sales increase of 4.3% to € 1.03 bn (volume + 2.2%). Chocolate products saw an increase thanks to a healthy Easter period, boosting sales up 1.2% to € 2.45 bn (volume - 0.7%). Figures were largely unchanged for sugar confectionery (volume + 0.8%, value - 0.4%) and fine baked goods (- 0.8%; + 0.2%).
