IRI monitor: salty snacks remain a guarantee for growth

Just ten months into 2016 and confectionery sales in German retail are considerably higher than the year prior. Based on the current IRI monitor, sales (not including chewing gum or seasonal items) increased by 3.6% to € 10.222 bn.
Sales volume increased by 2.6% to 1.433 m tonnes (basis: food retailers + drug stores + hard discount + gas station shops).

The salty snacks category attained a 7.5% boost in sales to € 2.301 bn, once again demonstrating the strongest growth, with a volume increase of 7.7% equalling 304,366 tonnes. The most important product group, chocolate products (without season) improved sales by 2.5% to € 4.424 bn, while volume receded slightly (459,350 tonnes, - 0.2%).

For fine baked goods and cakes, market researchers at IRI calculated a sales increase of 3.6% to € 1.821 bn with a volume increase of 2.7% to 358,904 tonnes. Sugar confectionery added only 1.5% in sales totalling € 1.676 bn. Volume increased by 1.8% to 310,414 tonnes. The chewing gum sector continued to fall below values from the year prior: € 407 m equals a drop in sales of 1.0% (volume: 292.1 m units, + 0.4%).
