IRI monitor: stable revenue increases by April

Following a satisfactory beginning to 2016 with an increase of 3.2% by February, German confectionery retail revenues also showed positive development in March and April.
According to the latest IRI monitor, the first four months of this year registered sales of € 4.016 bn in accordance with the current proceeds, corresponding with growth of 3.5%. Sales volume increased by 3.0% up to 559,325 tonnes (basis: food retailers + drug stores + hard discounters + gas station shops).

The chocolate segment (not including seasonal products) again enjoyed the highest sales with an increase of 2.6% up to € 1.779 bn. The segment‘s growth drivers were 100 g tablets (+ 6.2%), pralines with alcohol (+ 7.5%), praline mixes (+ 6.1%), small bites (+ 7.7%) and cooled bars (+ 6.6 %). The salty snacks category again achieved the highest increase rate with 6.0% up to € 886.8 m.

Sweet pastry & cake suppliers also enjoyed a revenue increase of 3.8% up to € 697.5 m. This growth was primarily attributable to the sub-segment cake/torte (+ 7.8%). By April, sugar confectionery sales had risen by 2.2% up to € 652.3 m. Above-average growth was seen in the segments chewable candies (+ 5.2%), chocolate-coated jelly (+ 7.6%) and effervescent products (+ 10.9%). With revenues of € 155.1 m chewing gum remained below the level of the previous year (- 0.9%).
