IRI: increased turnover amid slightly growing sales volume

From January to October 2015, German retail confectionery sales once again posted an increase, as shown in the latest IRI confectionery monitor.
Going up 3.9% to € 9.604 bn, revenues clearly surpassed last year‘s level. In contrast, the sales volume of 1.364 m tonnes (not including chewing gum and seasonal products) was only up 0.8% from last year‘s level (basis: food retailers + drug stores + hard discounters + gas station shops). With a 5.3% increase to € 4.163 bn, the top-selling segment, chocolate products (not including seasonal products) also saw the highest growth rate. Primary growth drivers were 100 g tablets (+ 7.6%), large tablets (+ 7.0%), and praline mixes (+ 8.1%). With an increase of 17.3%, the small ”other chocolate products” segment has been soaring. Posting an increase in turnover of 4.0% to € 2.131 bn, the salty snacks category can also look back on a satisfactory first ten-month period.

According to IRI‘s calculations, the pastry & cake category saw a turnover increase of 2.1% to € 1.712 bn. Sugar confectionery was up 2.1% to € 1.599 bn. Puffed rice (+ 6.6%), fizzy candy powder (+ 5.4%) and bonbons (+ 3.2%) showed above- average growth, while the chewing gum sales continued to decline by 3.3% to € 407.3 m.
