Once again, the foreign trade in confectionery proved to be the driving factor across the industry last year. Both exports from and imports to Germany saw healthy growth rates in 2014. No less than 49% of confectionery and snacks output produced by German manufacturers were earmarked for export, corresponding to 53% by value. With 1.325 m tonnes (+3.9%) and € 4.46 bn (+10.9%), the import share of confectionery and snacks sold in Germany hit a record of 33 and 34%, respectively. This was revealed by estimates the Bundesverband der Deutschen Süßwarenindustrie (BDSI) had published at the ISM Cologne on the basis of the German Statistical Office's data for the first three quarters of 2014.
Last year, German manufacturers had exported about 1.95 m tonnes of confectionery and snacks with a value of approx. € 6.87 bn. Semi-finished cocoa and chocolate products were the most dynamic segment, posting an increase by value of 31.1% (+15.5% by quantity). As to the chief buying countries, the German manufacturers had greatly ramped up deliveries throughout the first three quarters in 2014, most notably to the United Kingdom with an increase of 12.7% by quantity and 18.1% by value, to the Netherlands (+10.6%, +14.0%), and Poland (+20.2 %, +26.2 %). Exports to France - which is the leading outlet market for sweets made in Germany - were up 6.2% by value (+7.6% by quantity), which is a welcome development (source: BDSI, exports January to September 2014).
