Google and Nestlé announce Android KitKat

Google has ended months of online speculation regarding the name of the latest version of its Android mobile operating system, announcing it is to be called Android KitKat after the Nestlé chocolate wafer bar. The creators of the world's most popular mobile platform have joined forces with the world's biggest food and beverage company to name the the next release Android KitKat. Android has been developed by Google's software engineers under sweet-themed names since the release of Android Cupcake in 2009, and continuing in alphabetic order up until Jelly Bean.


To mark the release of Android KitKat, over 50 million specially branded packs will be on sale on 19 markets – from Australia, Brazil, Germany, India, Japan and the Middle East to Russia, the UK and the USA. Packs will lead consumers to the website android.com/kitkat where they will have the opportunity to win prizes. These include a limited number of Google Nexus 7 tablets, credits for GooglePlay, Google's online store for apps, games, music, books and much more. On selected markets a small number of exclusive Android robot shaped KitKat bars will be on offer as prizes.
