Bahlsen switches to segregated palm oil

Mid 2011 baked goods company Bahlsen began switching from conventional to sustainably produced “mass balance” standard palm oil. The process will be fully completed by the end of January 2012. This is just one of the steps taken by Bahlsen as they move towards implementing their sustainability strategy. The next stage – using only certified “segregated” palm oil – is to be completed by the end of 2015.

Since the end of 2010 Bahlsen has been a member of the “Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil” (RSPO), a global organisation which promotes the sustainable production of palm oil. Bahlsen are committed to dealing with all resources ecologically and economically aware of their responsibilities as a major brand manufacturer when sourcing and selecting raw materials. To this end, Bahlsen monitor developments in environmental and social matters in producing countries and expect suppliers to uphold environmental and ethical standards.

In the opinion of Bahlsen, sustainability is not an end in itself. Instead it is a continuous process, defining the path a responsible company should choose to take. For this reason Bahlsen will continue to set ambitious targets related to further optimising the company’s own sustainability and will do everything possible to achieve these goals.
