Mederer Group closes down plant in Fürth - Management remains at the headquarter

The Mederer Group has consistently strengthened their market position these past few years, despite an extremely difficult business environment. But the group can only continue to hold its own and stay on track to success if competitiveness and profitability is sustainably secured. With that in mind, Mederer has intensively examined various solutions with a view to optimising production. Construction of a new plant located on the banks of Fürth`s canal – the solution originally favoured by the group – involves considerable investment, and Mederer say the return is not high enough. For the same reason plans to modernise their current premises in Fürth (Oststrasse) have also been dropped.

After weighing up the financial pros and cons, the Mederer Group has now decided to extend their existing plant in Hagenow/Boizenburg and to concentrate production there as from 2013. All production operations currently running in Fürth will be relocated. Most will be moved to Hagenow/Boizenburg and some to the facility in Neunburg v Wald, where capacity will be increased.

187 people will be affected by the relocation of production from Fürth to Hagenow/Boizenburg. The Mederer Group has said it will undertake every effort to minimise the impact of the closure on employees. Company headquarters, management and administration will remain in Fürth. This means 113 jobs in Fürth for highly qualified staff will not be lost. On the contrary, concentrating administration in Fürth means new jobs will be created. “As a long-established, Fürth-based company, it was hard for us to take this decision. But given the fierce competition on the market we felt there was no alternative if we want to sustainably secure the future of our company,” said chief executive Herbert Mederer.
