News U.S. snack food packaging study

U.S. snack food packaging is expected to become a $5.6 bn market by 2010 if forecasts for an annual growth rate of 3.7 percent hold true. According to a new Snack Food Packaging Study conducted by Freedonia Group, Inc., a business research company, changes in food consumption patterns and emerging packaging trends, such as smaller portions which use more material relative to their volume than standard sizes, will drive increases in a number of packaging sectors.

Freedonia forecasts that demand for high-value packs will be led by nutrition bars, as well as by increases in demand for savory snacks, nuts and dried fruit. Emerging health and wellness trends in the confectionery industry are also expected to be favorable influences. Single serve and on-the-go packs, particularly rigid cups, canisters and other moulded forms, are also expected to make gains, particularly against flexible materials.
