BDSI: production and market volume above 2004 levels

Right in time for the AGM of the BDSI the Federal Statistical Office published their preliminary) full year confectionery production figures for 2005.According to the findings production in 2005 rose by 55,000 tonnes, or 1.6%, up to 3.407 m tonnes. Just before the ISM the BDSI had forecast an increase of 0.3% up to 3.374 m tonnes.The Federal Statistical Office reported production value of € 11.443 bn,an increase of €187 m or 1.7%. BDSI estimates in January anticipated a dip of 0.5% in production value down to € 11.222 bn. According to the preliminary results,production volume of chocolate confectionery rose by 0.5% up to 859,666 tonnes worth € 4.409 bn, an increase in value of 2.3%.Sugar confectionery production volume increased by 1.4% up to 545,549 tonnes worth €1.769 bn.Fine pastries production volume was up by 2.8% to 713,131 tonnes worth €2.179 bn (+ 1.0%). Snacks production grew 0.8% and totalled 284,084 tonnes worth €717 m (+3.2%).The highest increases in production volume and value in terms of percentages were reported for ice cream,which grew 5.8% to reach 367,210 tonnes worth € 956 m (+5.4%). According to the BDSI domestic confectionery market volume in 2005 rose by 1.2% or 32,000 tonnes to total 2.621 m tonnes worth € 9.399 bn (+ 0.6%). With the population of Germany currently 82.5 m, this translates into per capita consumption of 31.76 kg (+1.2%), with spending on confectionery amounting to € 113.93 per head in 2005 (+0.6%).
Confectionery imports declined
Confectionery imports (including semi-finished articles) declined both in volume (-11.6%, 846,184 tonnes) and in value (-9.3%,€2.325 bn).Imports accounted for 24.8% of domestic market volume,down from 28.6% the year before,and slid from 22.8% to 20.3% in terms of market value. There was a double digit decrease in shipments from EU states while imports from third countries increased. In 2005 there were 267 companies employing over 20 people in the German confectionery industry sector.The number of employees in the confectionery industry dropped from 56,115 in 2004 to 54,608 in 2005 (-2.7%). Sales totalled € 13.586 bn.
