ACNielsen confirms stronger confectionery sales in Germany
Market researchers ACNielsen have confirmed growth in confectionery sales in Germany for the current year up until September (calendar week 39) of 0.5% up to € 6.22bn. Aldi confectionery sales grew fastest, rising by 3.4% up to € 1.19 bn. Sales of confectionery in retail stores remained stable at € 4.56 bn (+ 0.5%), while impulse channel sales declined steeply by 6.1%, down to € 469 m.
A breakdown of sales data for food retail channels (not counting Aldi) reveals growth was most rapid in discount, where sales rose 4.1% up to € 1.56 bn. Sales in smaller and medium sized supermarkets increased by 2.1% / 2.3%; sales in department stores (-3.1%), supermarkets (-1.8%) and others (-8.2%) remained clearly below previous year levels.
